Thanksgiving Recipes: Rustic Apple Pie

Surprise! Here I am, on a Saturday. Bringing you a yummy recipe!

I owned up to my Thanksgiving food love yesterday, and I thought it would be fun to share the recipes for the part of dinner that I cook every year. Thanksgiving is usually a collaborative effort with contributions from me, my mom, my sister, and my Grandma. And though I sometimes add or subtract some of these things, this is what I'm usually responsible for each year (and I'm going to share each of these with you for the next 2 weeks!)

The Pioneer Woman's Rustic Apple Pie - You are here :)

Today, I'm starting with.....

The Pioneer Woman's Rustic Apple Pie

Matt and I saw this on an episode of her show once, and he wanted to try it so bad that he went to the store and bought all of the ingredients for me to make it as soon as the show ended. She usually makes a caramel sauce for it (I usually don't, though I have). And depending on the recipe you read, she sometimes does all-Criso, where I use her half-butter version. I also sometimes make it into a normal pie-plate pie rather than the flat shape in her recipe - but I like both a lot!

Here is her original recipe on Food Network: Flat Apple Pie with Perfect Pie Crust

I love the name, because I'll be honest - I am horrible at pie crust! I always thought I was a pie failure, and I sort of backed away from making them all together because my MIL is known for her pies. Why even bother, ya know? I made a disaster of a pie when I was pregnant with Luke, and cried big fat tears over my horrible crust. (It had nothing to do with the hormones. Right.) This pie crust is simple, easy, and I never screw it up! Except for that one time I rolled it out over where the dishwasher was running and the counter top was really hot and the butter all melted and I couldn't figure out was still delicious. ;)

Also: I put in about 3 Tablespoons of sugar to the crust. It doesn't at all mess with the structure of it. I don't understand why pie crust is so bland and blah, and I think that's the reason why I don't like many of them. This sweetens it up just a touch, and everyone loves it!

I've made these many times, in many ways.....

No laughing at the cat pie - story is one post back ;)

I'm not going to post the full recipe here, because the link to the authentic recipe is above (and it's not my recipe!) If you follow that to a T (and maybe add the 3 Tbspns of sugar I add to the crust), you'll have the perfect Thanksgiving Apple Pie this year - promise!

Thanksgiving Day Recipes

I'll be back tomorrow with recipe #2 - it's something that I consider myself to be pretty darn good at! ;)
