I want it to be easily portable, should we need to grab it and go, and focus on staying warm, comfortable and fed. I put most of this together with things I had around the house!
Here's what mine contains so far:
-2 Old Sweatshirts
-3 Cotton receiving blankets
-Small first aid kit (band aids, alcohol wipes, rubber gloves, tweezers, ointment, gauze & emergency contact numbers including family, doctors, and dentists)
-Bag of snacks (graham crackers, granola bars and fruit snacks)
-Bag of diapers & feminine products (I don't know about you, but I don't want to be without!)
-Hand warmers (the shake and activate kind, enough for every family member to have 2)
-LED candles (can't exactly strike a match in the van!)
-Roll of quarters (for pay phones, tolls, drive-thru hot chocolate)
-Pen & paper
I still want to get some inexpensive hats and mittens for each of us that can stay in the car. Target usually has them for a few dollars each. Chances are, if we're in the van in winter, we'll already be wearing those things (or at least the kids will be), but you never know!
I don't want to go crazy filling this thing up. We usually keep a large blanket in the back of the van, and each of the kids have their own all winter (so they can safely wear fleece jackets and light coats while buckled into their car seats and still be warm enough). I'll probably stick a few water bottles in there, too.
There are LOTS of lists out there, full of things to include in a kit like this, and if you want to be overly prepared for the apocalypse, maybe check one of those out? ;) My hope is that this simple list is something you can put together with things already in your house so you don't have to spend a small fortune preparing for the "probably not gonna happen".
Stay safe and warm! <3
