I was blessed to have that at all, I know. Not everyone gets to stay home with their children and enjoy the slow pace of newborn naps in your lap, toddlers carefully figuring out puzzles and toys, multiple naps per day where you can take a deep breath and maybe even dabble in a hobby for an hour or two. But I did. And what I didn't realize was - that time is incredibly, incredibly fleeting.
My kids are now 5-1/2, 3, and 9 months - and between the three of them, our list of activities and obligations grows longer every day. Crossing things off the to do list is now about not being lost in an avalanche than actually getting anywhere. And I know that some day, all three of them will be in school, and my life will look a lot different then, but figuring out this juggling act is a chore! One that I didn't realize would start quite so early or last quite so long.
I expected Summer to be slower-paced. No back and forth to preschool, field trips, preparing for celebrations in classrooms and squeezing appointments between the carefully balanced schedule of school life.
It's been a little more fun, yes, but no less busy. No less full. No less crazy!
I find the occasional moment to lay across my patio swing (the best of all mother's day gifts) and drift back and forth while I let the breeze and the leaf-filtered sunshine wash over me. But it's rare, and never, ever long enough.
Finding the balance between motherhood, housework, work-work, blogging, handmade business owning, and volunteering is never-ending. Never, ever, ever, ending. It's exhausting.
But it's perfect. Because I'm alive, and living as purposefully as I can.
At the moment, I'm trying hard to stay a bit more un-plugged, read a few more books, visit a few more places, spend a little more time outdoors, bake a few more things from scratch, and use up every last drop of Summer before it's behind us. There are only 5 weeks left of Summer for Lukas and 6 weeks for Henry before their lives revolve around school once again. I'm both anxious for the routine and saddened by it. I won't even cover the other things I have mixed emotions about, because we don't have all day to hear about how crazy my mama brain can be. ;)
In the mean time, here are a few of the things we've been up to:
We went strawberry picking.
We went to the lake (Keuka), and had Hibachi with cousins.
We saw Bruno Mars in concert, and it was AMAZING!
We celebrated the 4th with a picnic with friends and sparklers in the backyard.
We, er...I (+ some friends) saw Justin Timberlake in concert.
It was...well, it was Justin. ;)
We celebrated Henry's 3rd Birthday with a Campfire party and Mickey Mouse treats.
And just last weekend, we made s'mores around the fire and camped in a tent in our backyard. Complete with breakfast on the grill!
The end of Summer seems both too soon, and still long enough away to fit in a lot more fun! August is one of the best months of the year for me - my anniversary & birthday are both in it, so I'll have even more fun to report next time ;)
